Couples Counseling

Couples are most satisfied in their relationship when it consists of a growing knowledge and understanding of one another within the context of a safe and secure emotional bond. The bond of safety is foundational for the vulnerability of being know. A secure bond allows couples to release understandable fears and surrender to the journey of what one author refers to as becoming “scary close.”

The natural fear of closeness drives mental assessments and behavioral patterns that generate negative cycles usually characterized by attack and withdraw strategies. The cycle has a life of its own, driving a couple further and further apart, each blaming the other for their pain. Rather than feeling safe, known, and loved, the partners get caught in a negative feedback loop that causes them to feel misunderstood, disconnected, and alone in the relationship.

I have seen success in my work with couples who have come to me with an array of distresses, everything from infidelity to general feelings of disconnection and loneliness. I have completed advanced training and supervision in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. EFT is a warm, respectful and scientifically proven method for helping couples enrich the quality of their relationship through the development of a secure emotional bond. I focus on dealing with a couple’s unique history and present reality.
